The future of learning? Look to international universities – POLITICO

In a moment of great changes on many levels, such as health, economics, politics, labor and science — changes accelerated by the pandemic — institutions and societies are asking international universities such as Luiss Guido Carli for help.

Strategies, research and higher education can accelerate societies’  sustainable and resilient development. Luiss University’s answer, in a process actually started far before the pandemic, is a stronger effort on digitalization and innovation, and greater connection with businesses to shape global citizens and managers.       This is the aim that Luiss Guido Carlo University has always pursued.

These objectives have been in the very fabric of Luiss since its foundation. The university has developed privileged relationships with the business community and with public institutions through its affiliation to Confindustria, the General Confederation of Italian Industry, as well as law firms, government institutions and civil society. In recent years, Luiss has also sped up a process of internationalization, first of all in the Euro-Mediterranean region (Europe and MENA), where the university is a higher education hub, recently extending also to Central and South Africa, North America and South-East Asia. Luiss’ students realized this evolution was taking place thanks to the consequent upgrade of the learning environment, more international professors and students, and programs based on a global perspective.

A more objective perspective on this internationalization and innovation process is given by the numbers: 58 international publications were released in 2020, with 14 grants won in the same year. At Luiss, people from 15 different countries work together, a dynamic mix of academic professors and practitioners such as executives, diplomats and representatives from public administration. This varied group of educators has developed a model that prides itself on teaching students how to be future shapers, by dealing with the complexities of a post-pandemic and digital age. During their studies, Luiss’ students acquire a toolbox to face a changing and shifting reality. The university’s global reputation is also demonstrated in the impressive community of alumni who work across the world in different sectors, as well as its student population, which is made up of 85 nationalities. With over 300 agreements in more than 60 countries all over the world, Luiss is committed to continuing its global development to provide students the chance to immerse themselves in a rich environment that complements a high-quality education.

The QC World University Rankings also contribute to confirming Luiss’ prestige, naming the university among the top 50 for Politics and International Studies, through its four departments of Economics and Finance, Business and Management, Law and Political Science.

Furthermore, the use of digital environments — imposed by COVID-19 — for the delivery of didactics has made it possible to reflect and reinforce innovative educational processes and inquiry-based teaching. “During the pandemic, we took a fast course in the future,” said Andrea Prencipe, rector of Luiss University. “We are convinced that to manage unforeseen crises and challenges, students must acquire new skills and a multidisciplinary approach.” This is why Luiss launched a series of online programs with a new ethos, described as “on-live”. Prencipe says the programs revolutionize online learning, as unlike usual online courses, the on-live experience will not be in isolation but rather team-based and student-centered. Key to the on-live method is teamwork and a blend of synchronous and asynchronous teaching techniques that allow flexibility and compatibility with other commitments while receiving continuous assessment. In this two-pronged approach, professors, practitioners and students can work in real-time but also have the chance to digest content from asynchronous models in their own time. As part of the on-live experience, students will also be able to take part in a virtual internship.

This will connect students with Luiss University’s privileged relationship with real-world business, institutions, and public administration practitioners. The role of practitioners will be to provide insights to enhance students’ readiness and reinforce their motivation to enter the job market. According to internal data, the average Luiss graduate accepts a job offer 2.3 months after graduation. Luiss University’s career team helps students find internships and job offers, apply for roles, learn more about potential recruiters via job profiles, access exclusive tips and advice, and register for career fairs and employer presentations. This interdisciplinary approach is based on the idea that challenges cannot be addressed by using the tools of a single discipline. This equips students with a comprehensive vision of solving problems in an increasingly complex business landscape and makes the learning experience at Luiss University unique.

Openness to the world of work and to different social and economic contexts is at the heart of the “engaged” university model pursued by Luiss. A university is engaged when it actively interacts with the business world, with professionals, various production sectors, and civil society at national and international levels.
