“All possible options are on the table” if there’s proof Russia is utilizing chemical weapons in its battle on Ukraine, the U.Okay.’s Armed Forces Minister James Heappey stated Tuesday.
“There are reports of the use of chemical weapons, we have not been able to verify those ourselves,” Heappey instructed Sky News in an interview. “But let’s be clear — if they are used at all then [Russian] President [Vladimir] Putin should know that all possible options are on the table in terms of how the West might respond.”
The U.Okay. and U.S. introduced in a single day that they’re assessing unconfirmed studies claiming Russian forces had used chemical weapons in Mariupol, the besieged metropolis in jap Ukraine. The studies emerged on Monday from Ukraine’s controversial Azov Battalion, which said three individuals have been displaying indicators of chemical poisoning together with respiratory points after a Russian drone dropped an unknown substance.
Heappey wouldn’t element what choices the West would contemplate, arguing it was “useful to maintain some ambiguity.” In March, Heappey hinted that the usage of chemical weapons would represent a so-called pink line for the U.Okay.
Last month, U.S. President Joe Biden warned Russia would pay a “severe price” if it used chemical weapons.
In his nightly tackle late Monday, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy didn’t verify the unverified claims about the usage of chemical weapons in Mariupol, however did say: “I would like to remind world leaders that the possible use of chemical weapons by the Russian military has already been discussed.”
