20 years of ‘clock-watching’ pays off for Bau man

KUCHING, April 19 (Bernama) — For 20 years, Mohd Firdaus Abdullah has been gazing at timepieces, and extra so now with the upcoming Aidilfitri festive season, enabling him to earn RM4,000 a month by repairing them.

It is crucial for the 38-year-old watchmaker to have good imaginative and prescient as he’s working with tiny components when repairing clocks and watches.

“Precision and patience as well skills to use the necessary equipment are vital in repairing these timepieces,” he informed Bernama.

Hailing from the Bau district, close to right here, Mohd Firdaus got interested within the commerce when he was 18 years previous after working at a watch store right here.

Without present process formal coaching to turn out to be a watchmaker, he gained expertise working in several watch outlets for a number of years till he determined to open his personal enterprise.

He started in 2009 with only a small cart at a shopping center in Jalan P Ramlee, right here, the place he did restore and upkeep providers for mechanical watches.

“There are times that I have to serve 40 customers a day, and now that Hari Raya is drawing closer, customers come wanting to service about four to eight watches,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Mohd Firdaus stated there have been challenges to maintain his enterprise afloat, particularly through the implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO) in addition to with the present pattern of carrying smartwatches.

“Every business has its challenges but I will continue doing what I love to do. I do not mind gazing at timepieces for hours on end just to repair them. It is satisfying for a watchmaker to be able to repair or bring a damaged timepiece back to life,” he added.
